04/2010New commission Bedford Academy

Bedford Academy (formerly John Bunyan Upper School) is a joint venture with Bond Bryan Architects and Willmott Dixon Construction, catering for 11-18 year age group. The school has a strong Science and Technology specialism in its curriculum, which is reflected in the design of the external landscape. The outdoor spaces consist of an amphitheatre for performances; molecular terrace which draws reference from DNA molecules used to define seating and grass mounds; outdoor classrooms to promote ecology and biodiversity observation; wildlife pond, bog garden and swales to provide education in the study of wildlife in context. The planting scheme uses native species in keeping with the high ecological value in the established habitat corridor along the southern periphery of the site. This is supplemented with wildflower meadows to provide colour, texture, seasonality, and most importantly, an educational facility. The landscape provides a rich source of outdoor learning spaces to enhance the indoor learning curriculum, and is robust to withstand the demands of the age group. The project commences on site in April 2011.

10/2009FoRM appointed to design landscape for South Shields Leisure Centre

The proposed South Shields Leisure Centre public realm landscape provides a robust setting for a new leisure centre a kilometer away from the town centre of South Shields. The site is in a prominent and exposed location adjacent to the seafront which makes it a pivotal point and key node between the town centre and coastline. It is surrounded by Grade II listed parks and encompasses Grade II listed monuments reflecting the maritime history of the site. The landscape strategy aims to unite the pier, foreshore and parade buildings with the town centre. It is intended this will provide a catalyst for further regeneration of the area. The core of this linkage is a high quality plaza populated with dune formations and ‘littoral’ rock outcrops as an allegorical representation of the foreshore features. The landscape strategy consists of a stepped ramp access to an intensive green roof with vantage points, which partially shelters a lawn performance area. Mature tree planting is used to define the plaza connection of the foreshore and town centre, and to mark the avenue approach to the leisure centre entrance.
