The proposal to rejuvenate a redundant transport infrastructure has been inspired by the DNA genome discovery - the map of life. The continuous helical trellis wraps around the existing structure of an abandoned railway viaduct and defines a series of different programmatic zones. It also provides the main structural support for the elevated ribbon-like walkways and the integral vertical access points/ramps.
Within the overall narrative, we have designed a series of climatically controlled pavilions to celebrate the ecological and cultural diversity of NYC communities. The Highline design includes several key public realm spaces starting with a Hudson Plaza and continuing into a market/restaurant/bar area, the Big Apple Orchard and terminating in a dramatic platform with an unique panoramic view of New York City.
